North Carolina has launched two new centers to support the state’s responsible gambling framework and address rising gambling addiction concerns. The move follows the recent legalization of sports betting in the state. Both initiatives are funded by the state’s Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services.

Two New Centers to Combat Gambling Addiction

The two new centers are:

  1. The Center of Excellence for Gambling Addiction Policy and Practice (CEGAPP).
  2. The Professional Development Center (PDC).

The Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC) operates both facilities. The opening reflects the state’s strategy to match market growth with increased investment in prevention, treatment, and education. Sports betting became legal in North Carolina in March 2024.

Building Expertise and Training the Workforce

The newly launched centers are tasked with providing essential training, resources, and professional development for behavioral health workers.

CEGAPP will focus on creating specialized knowledge among addiction professionals. This center will train specialists in prevention, treatment, recovery, and public advocacy. It aims to equip service providers with the skills to promote responsible gaming and mitigate addiction risks.

The PDC complements CEGAPP’s work by addressing broader workforce needs. The center will offer training in leadership and communication. Furthermore, it will develop mentorship pathways for new providers entering the field, connecting experienced leaders with new professionals.

Morgan Coyner, APNC Executive Vice President, stressed the importance of these efforts. He stated that supporting professional development is “essential to ensure providers remain prepared to meet evolving challenges in the sector.”
