Americans Expected to Wager Record $30 Billion on NFL Season, AGA Reports
The American Gaming Association (AGA) projects that Americans will legally wager a record $30 billion on the upcoming 2025 NFL season. This estimate represents an 8.5% increase over the revised total of $27.6 billion wagered last season.

A Dual Message: Growth and Responsibility
Alongside its impressive growth forecast, the AGA is using the start of the football season to launch a major responsible gaming push. The organization is promoting its “Have A Game Plan®. Bet Responsibly™.” campaign, a national initiative aimed at educating bettors on safe wagering practices.
“This season, fans have more ways than ever to responsibly engage with the game they love,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. He added that the legal industry encourages fans to “have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience – regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game – remains enjoyable.”
The Five Principles of the “Game Plan”
The campaign is built around five key principles designed to promote a safe and sustainable betting environment. It encourages bettors to:
- Set a budget and stick to it, never chasing losses.
- Keep betting social as a form of shared entertainment.
- Understand the odds and the games they are wagering on.
- Play only on legal, regulated platforms.
- Maintain good sportsmanship by never harassing athletes.
Public Acceptance Fuels Market Growth
The growth of the market aligns with strong public support for legal wagering. According to the AGA, 75% of Americans support legal sports betting in their home state. Furthermore, an overwhelming 90% now view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment.
The AGA’s estimate is based on the national growth in betting handle so far in 2025, applied to last season’s total. The projection includes all wagers from the preseason through Super Bowl LX in February 2026. The dual message from the industry’s leading trade group is clear: while the market is set for another record-breaking year, the focus remains on ensuring that growth is responsible and sustainable.
