DraftKings has submitted a new application to the National Futures Association (NFA), following an earlier attempt that did not move forward. The company is exploring potential involvement in prediction markets, a sector drawing increasing attention from mainstream betting operators.

Seeking a Role in Prediction Markets

The NFA does not have the authority to grant or deny companies the right to operate prediction markets. However, membership in the organization carries weight within the financial sector. Several competitors, including PrizePicks and Underdog, have already applied to join.

DraftKings’ earlier application was withdrawn after a lengthy process, leaving uncertainty about its ambitions in the space. Unlike Kalshi, which chose to operate outside of the association, DraftKings appears determined to pursue affiliation as it considers its options for launching prediction market products.

A Cautious Approach From DraftKings

Despite this latest step, DraftKings has not confirmed it will introduce prediction markets. The company remains guarded about its plans, balancing the potential of a new vertical with the risks of diluting its strong position in sports betting.

Industry operators have often criticized prediction markets, yet most acknowledge they are unlikely to disappear. For DraftKings, applying for NFA membership suggests preparation for future opportunities, even if the company continues to protect its core sportsbook business.
