Indiana Sports Betting Handle Declines in May

Sports betting spending in Indiana fell for the second consecutive month in May, totaling $361.6 million.

This represents an 8.2% decrease from the $393.9 million wagered in April. Despite the monthly decline, the May handle was up 27.6% compared to the $283.4 million bet in May of the previous year.

Basketball Betting Trends

Basketball continued to dominate as the most popular sport for wagering in Indiana. In May, $97.2 million was bet on basketball, a 19.8% drop from the $121.5 million wagered in April.

However, this figure was still 35.0% higher than the amount wagered on basketball in May of last year.

The arrival of Caitlin Clark, a highly anticipated talent who joined the WNBA team Indiana Fever in mid-April, was expected to boost betting interest, though it did not prevent the decline from April.

Other Sports and Parlay Bets

In addition to basketball, baseball betting saw a significant handle, with $73.7 million wagered in May. American football bets amounted to $1.7 million. Other sports collectively accounted for $86.7 million in wagers, while parlay bets attracted a total of $102.1 million.

Indiana’s sports betting revenue for May reached $39.0 million, marking a 5.1% increase from April’s revenue and a 15.4% rise from the $33.8 million generated in May of the previous year. The state collected $3.7 million in taxes from sports betting during the month.
