The National Basketball Association (NBA) sent a memorandum to all teams on Monday, seeking a review of its policies and the wider regulation of sports betting. The league views this as the correct time to re-evaluate how betting should be controlled to better protect the league, its players, and its fans. The document was obtained by ESPN following recent gambling-related scandals and arrests across the sports world.

Proposition Bets Require Additional Scrutiny

The NBA specifically called for heightened integrity controls on proposition bets (prop bets) tied to individual player performance. The league stated these bets involve “heightened integrity concerns and require additional scrutiny.”

The memorandum highlighted the ability to detect unusual wagering. It noted that odd betting on guard Terry Rozier’s“unders” during a March 2023 game was found in real-time because the wagers were placed legally.

However, the league believes more needs to be done from a regulatory standpoint to protect the integrity of the NBA and its affiliated leagues. These concerns come after Rozier and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones were arrested on charges related to fraudulent betting.

Policy Review Targets Player Safety and Education

The league has started reviewing several internal policies to address the increased risks posed by widespread legal gambling. These reviews cover:

  • Injury reporting rules.
  • Training and education for all NBA personnel.
  • Safety measures for NBA players.

The memorandum stressed that every effort must be made to ensure that players, coaches, and staff are completely aware of the dire risks that gambling presents to their careers and livelihoods. The league also aims to ensure that its injury disclosure rules are appropriate and that players are protected from harassment from bettors.

AI to Enhance Integrity Monitoring

The NBA is exploring ways to improve its current monitoring programs for integrity, both internal and external. The league plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced tools.

The goal is to better synthesize all available data from betting operators, social media, and other sources. This integrated data analysis will help quickly identify and flag any activity that raises betting concerns.
