New York Proposes Raising Legal Age for Fantasy Sports to 21
Lawmakers, led by Sen. Joe Addabbo, gathered at the New York State Capitol to discuss a bill that would not only expand the number of licenses available to fantasy sports operators but also raise the legal age for participation.
Raising the Age Limit
The proposed legislation seeks to align the age limit for fantasy sports with that of mobile sports betting by raising it from 18 to 21.
This change is part of a broader effort to ensure responsible gaming and provide a safer environment for young adults making financial decisions related to gaming.
Expected Revenue and Support
Sen. Addabbo highlighted the potential financial benefits of the bill, estimating it could generate between $150 million and $200 million in new revenue for the state over the next decade.
The initiative has received widespread support from both the public and notable sports figures. According to a poll conducted by the Fantasy Advocates for New York Sports, a vast majority of both Democrats (75%) and Republicans (76%) are in favor of expanding the state’s daily fantasy sports laws.
Former New York Giant David Tyree also voiced his support, emphasizing the importance of raising the age limit to 21 to ensure a safer and more responsible gaming experience for participants.
