San Diego State University Launches Institute on Sports Wagering and Gaming
San Diego State University (SDSU) unveiled the Institute on Sports Wagering and Gaming (ISWAG), establishing a pioneering research and education hub within the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Driving Research and Policy Insights
ISWAG, under the direction of Assistant Professor Dr. Brandon Mastromartino, will conduct interdisciplinary studies on sports betting behavior, regulation, responsible marketing, and player protection.
“Our goal is to provide timely, evidence-based insights that inform industry best practices, responsible gaming strategies, and public policy conversations,” Mastromartino stated.
ISWAG’s research could guide stakeholders navigating issues like problem gambling and regulatory compliance.
Fostering Industry Collaboration
The institute will forge partnerships with sports betting operators, professional leagues, tribal gaming entities, and regulators to deliver strategic solutions.
These collaborations aim to address industry needs, such as enhancing consumer protections and optimizing marketing practices amid rising state tax rates.
By aligning academic expertise with real-world applications, ISWAG seeks to shape a sustainable betting ecosystem.
ISWAG will offer certificate programs, student research opportunities, and executive education to build expertise in sports wagering.
Housed within SDSU’s hospitality school, the institute will create pathways for students and professionals to enter the gaming sector, addressing the demand for skilled talent in a market employing 200,000 workers nationwide.
