D.C. Sports Betting Sees 254% Year-Over-Year Surge in July
In July 2024 Washington D.C.’s legal sports betting market total handle surged 254.1% year-over-year. The increase results from the market’s expansion beyond a single operator.

July Betting Handle Reaches $27.3 Million
In July, D.C. sportsbooks recorded a handle of $27.3 million, a sharp increase from the $7.7 million reported during the same period last year when GambetDC held a monopoly.
Though the July handle represents a 7.7% decrease from June’s figures, this is in line with the typical summer slowdown observed across the U.S. sports betting industry.
The July numbers bring the year-to-date total handle in D.C. to $162.8 million, a 65.4% increase compared to the same point last year.
A New Era for D.C. Sports Betting
Until mid-July 2024, FanDuel was the only sportsbook allowed to operate beyond the two-mile radius around retail sportsbooks, following the replacement of the failed GambetDC platform.
However, new legislation has allowed BetMGM, Caesars, and DraftKings to enter the market, enabling residents to place bets from home, fueling the dramatic growth.
