Maine’s Inaugural Month of Legal Sports Betting: A Financial Snapshot

04.12.2023

Maine’s foray into legal sports betting has kicked off with a strong start, seeing substantial financial activity in its first month.

The state, known for its scenic landscapes and now burgeoning betting scene, witnessed over $37 million in sports bets placed within just the first few weeks of legalization.

Impressive Total Handle and Player Winnings

The total handle for the month amounted to $37.6 million, covering the period from the market’s launch on November 3rd to the end of the month. Bettors in Maine were successful, securing winnings totaling $32.7 million. After accounting for voided bets and federal excise tax, the state’s adjusted gross receipts stood at a notable $4.6 million.

The State of Maine Gambling Control Unit reported additional revenue through taxation, amounting to $464,152. This revenue is derived from a 10% tax on the adjusted gross receipts earned by the operators.

Operator Performance: DraftKings vs. Caesars

In the competitive landscape of Maine’s sports betting, two operators, DraftKings and Caesars, were active during the opening month. DraftKings emerged as the frontrunner with $4.3 million in adjusted gross receipts from a total handle of $30.5 million. In partnership with the Passamaquoddy tribe, DraftKings’ online sportsbook contributions were significant. The operator also paid substantial amounts in federal excise and other taxes.

On the other hand, Caesars, collaborating with three of the Wabanaki nations, posted adjusted gross receipts of $382,374 from a $7.1 million handle. This figure indicates a promising start for Caesars, despite trailing behind DraftKings in the initial month.

The impressive total handle and the subsequent revenue generation underscore the potential economic benefits of regulated sports betting.

The participation of both major operators and local tribes in this venture is a testament to a well-structured and inclusive approach to sports betting.
